At Columbia Interpreting Services, we are dedicated to providing a bridge between the hearing and Deaf communities, offering culturally- and linguistically-sensitive ASL interpreters, Deaf interpreters, and tactile interpreters.

Our team is certified and licensed to serve in the state of Missouri.

History

Columbia Interpreting Services was founded by Kathleen Alexander, an interpreter with more than 25 years of working experience.

CIS grew out of her strong desire to do something more for the Deaf and interpreting communities in the Columbia area. Kathleen felt Mid-Missouri would benefit greatly from a new organization, and thus, in September 1998, Columbia Interpreting Services (CIS) was established. The success of CIS is based on the level of commitment, expertise, and involvement that the employees are willing to give back to CIS.

Mission

CIS strives for excellence to provide a link between the Deaf and hearing communities as such:

  • Provide ASL interpreters, transliterators, oral interpreters
  • Provide quality and timely services
  • Provide service to Deaf community and Business community
  • Provide a workplace environment that supports the growth of individuals and the team
  • Provide services that meet & exceed the expectations of all customers both internal and external

CIS uses qualified, certified, and licensed interpreters and trained office staff to provide equal access and effective communication between Deaf and hearing clients. In order to do so, we are able to offer:

  • In-service training to increase awareness of the Deaf community, language sensitivity, and cultural sensitivity.
  • Information referral on ADA compliance for agencies, employers and other clients in fields such as government, mental health services, medical, law, education and business, Conventions, Seminars, Performing Arts/Theatre
  • Advocacy for individuals who are Deaf and hard of hearing
  • Information about Deaf culture to organizations and individuals that will encounter Deaf and hard of hearing persons
